About this course

Free Level 2 Art and Design Course in Solihull. Classes run at Solihull College and University Centre, full-time during the day.

The course runs over two years. You'll explore a broad range of creative disciplines, working to briefs and developing practical skills across drawing, design, and mixed media. The OCR Cambridge Technical Diploma covers both technical craft and creative thinking, helping you find the area of the course that suits you best.

You'll finish with a Level 2 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Art and Design.

Who this course is for

Our OCR Level 2 diploma will immerse you in the world of art and design, getting you to grips with your raw skills and ambitions to succeed with in a creative capacity.

Our level 2 Diploma in creative art aims to prepare you for the next level of your studies with a range of skills and practice that will help you choose a specialism at level 3.

The course will also give you a vast range of employability skills.

Creative art is a discipline that is very varied; we will work to briefs in the following areas:

  • Art history and theory - through research and gallery visits
  • Observational drawing
  • Painting
  • 2D/3D
  • Photography
  • Graphic Design

You will produce project work during the year that covers all these areas, with an emphasis on developing and responding to briefs in an independent and creative way.

Entry requirements

You must complete an application form. Once your application has been registered you will be invited to attend an interview to determine your suitability for the subject and level. Places on the course are offered following a successful interview where you must present a portfolio of your work and produce a positive reference.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop drawing and observational skills across a range of media.
  • You'll explore colour, composition, and visual communication.
  • You'll work to creative briefs, responding to set themes and client-style tasks.
  • You'll experiment with materials including print, textiles, photography, and digital tools.
  • You'll build a portfolio of work that shows your creative range.
  • You'll develop skills in evaluating and refining your own work.
  • You'll begin to identify a specialist area to pursue at Level 3.

How you will learn

You'll learn through studio-based practical work, projects, and creative briefs. Assessment is portfolio-based, meaning your work builds up over the two years rather than through written exams. You'll present a portfolio at interview before the course begins, and ongoing project work forms the main evidence of your progress throughout.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Solihull College and University Centre will confirm anything else you need before you start.
