About this course

Level 1 Working with Children Course in Kingston upon Thames. Classes run at The Hook Centre, part-time during the day, with a mix of online study and time at the centre. The course runs over 10 weeks. You'll explore child development, safeguarding, and how to support children in settings such as schools and childcare. No placement in a childcare setting is required to complete this working with children qualification. You must be aged 19 years old or over as at 31 August 2026, and ordinarily resident in the UK.

Who this course is for

This course provides an excellent starting point for anyone looking to pursue a career in working with children in settings such as schools or childcare.

The course can also be of great value to parents or anyone who interacts with or cares for children.

Entry requirements

Applications cannot be made until 1st July 2026. You must be aged 19 or over (as at 31st August 2026) and ordinarily resident in the UK. You will need a sufficient level of English to be able to follow the curriculum and complete any course work.

Please be sure you have enough time each week to attend all classes and to complete any homework assignments outside of class.

This is a knowledge-based qualification; no placement in a childcare setting is required to complete this qualification.

What you will learn

  • You'll explore how children grow and develop at different ages and stages.
  • You'll learn about safeguarding and how to keep children safe.
  • You'll understand the roles and responsibilities of adults who work with children.
  • You'll look at how to support children's play and learning.
  • You'll develop knowledge of communication with children and their families.
  • You'll study the different settings where children are cared for and educated.

How you will learn

This is a blended course. You'll attend daytime classes at The Hook Centre and complete some study online. The qualification is knowledge-based, so assessment is through written coursework and assignments rather than a workplace placement. You'll also complete homework tasks between sessions, so you'll need enough time each week to manage both class attendance and work outside the classroom.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. The Hook Centre will confirm anything else you need before you start.
