Free Level 1 Exploring the Aviation Industry Course in Derby. Classes run at Nottingham College Terminal Building, on-site at East Midlands Airport. The course is fully funded if you meet the entry requirements, which include being aged 19 or over, having lived in the UK for at least three years, and being on a low income or claiming eligible benefits. This two-week programme introduces you to how the aviation industry works. You'll cover topics including airport geography, customer service, teamwork, and preparing for employment. The course includes an airport tour, CV workshops, and guest speakers.

Who this course is for

This 2-week on-site programme provides a direct route for career or study progression within the aviation industry.

It will help to put unemployed or low income learners on the right path to aviation employment.

This qualification is suitable if you are aged 19 and above. It provides an introduction to the aviation industry and aims to give learners the opportunity to progress onto various other qualifications in the travel and tourism sector.

This programme with be growth of our Projects provision as the course will be delivered as part of East Midlands Airport’s Pre-Employment Programme for Adult Learners.

This programme is an ideal place to start to extend your skills, knowledge and confidence.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but you must:

be aged 19+ have lived in the UK for a minimum of 3 years be able to show proof of identity be on an income below £20,319 or claiming eligible benefits

What you will learn

  • You'll explore how the aviation industry is structured and how airports operate.
  • You'll learn key aviation terminology used across the sector.
  • You'll study airport locational geography and how routes and hubs connect.
  • You'll develop customer service skills specific to aviation environments.
  • You'll practise teamwork skills in an aviation context.
  • You'll prepare for job applications, including CV and cover letter writing.
  • You'll build practical skills in money, time, and temperature relevant to aviation roles.
  • You'll develop written communication skills to support workplace tasks.

How you will learn

Learning takes place face to face over two weeks on-site at East Midlands Airport. Sessions include classroom teaching, self-study opportunities, CV and cover letter writing workshops, guest speaker talks, and an airport tour. You'll also have access to onsite business partner support and free employability support throughout the programme.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Nottingham College Terminal Building will confirm anything else you need before you start. You will need to bring proof of identity as part of the enrolment process.
