Working in Public Services can provide a truly satisfying career, especially if you enjoy working with people in a varied, exciting working environment. The Level 1 Diploma in Entry to the Uniformed Services course will suit you if you are highly motivated and are looking to combine classroom-based study with exercise, sport, outdoor activities and residential trips. The course will introduce you to the skills required for a career in any of the uniformed services such as Police, Fire Service, Army, Navy, RAF, Royal Marines or Prison Service.
The course consists of 7 units.
Units: Investigate Employment Opportunities in the Uniformed Services/Well-being and Physical Fitness/Team Working Skills/Carrying out Essential Map Reading and Navigation/Participate in Competitive Sports/Developing Self Discipline/Health, Safety and Emergency Care.
The NCFE programme will use continuous assessment rather than examinations and you will be able to track your performance as you work towards your targets. You will be encouraged to manage your own assessments and identify where you have met the required standards. Methods of assessment may include web blogs, presentations, practical demonstrations, posters, reports, leaflets, interviews and discussions.
The programme is taught through theoretical and practical training sessions supported by functional skills. Each lesson will provide you with assessment opportunities as you work to achieve your goals and targets. You will need an active passion for the public services and your tutors will encourage you to discuss your own achievements as well as the issues in society.
During the course, there will be opportunities to achieve other qualifications in addition to your main programme. These additional qualifications may include first aid and customer services.
Jobs you could do
What you could study next
A natural next step is a Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Public Services, which goes deeper into uniformed service roles and can strengthen your application to services directly. From there, you could look at a BTEC Level 3 in Uniformed Public Services or an apprenticeship with a specific service. Some learners also use this qualification as a foundation before applying for an Access to Higher Education Diploma in subjects like criminology or public services management.
