Entry requirements

Must be aged 16 to 18 and wanting an introduction to the variety of construction trades, to gain skills in those areas and perhaps to decide which trade is the right one to pursue a career in. No previous knowledge or experience is required.

What you will learn

  • You'll practise core bricklaying techniques, including laying and bonding.
  • You'll work with timber in carpentry and joinery tasks.
  • You'll apply plaster to walls and surfaces using standard methods.
  • You'll use painting and decorating tools and preparation techniques.
  • You'll carry out construction operations tasks on site-style activities.
  • You'll cut and fix wall and floor tiles to a given specification.
  • You'll handle basic plumbing tasks and understand pipework fundamentals.

How you will learn

You'll learn through practical, hands-on activities in a classroom and workshop setting. Each trade area is covered through skills-based tasks. Assessment is through observation of practical work and short written or verbal tasks. You'll be assessed as you work through each trade area rather than in a single end exam.
