About this course

Free Level 1 Construction Skills Course in Sheffield. Classes run at Nacro Education Centre Sheffield. You'll work in practical workshops covering bricklaying, painting and decorating, plastering, joinery, and cavity walling. Health and safety in construction is built into the course throughout. Functional Skills English and maths are included to support your industry knowledge. The course runs over one year with daytime, flexible attendance. Who this course is for

Our construction course allows learners to develop a variety of skills. Learners will be taught tool identification, cavity walling, corner building, block work, painting and decorating and plastering. We also offer an engaging joinery course where students can build their own models. Our course includes functional skills throughout to support the students in gaining the relevant industry knowledge.

What you will learn

  • You'll practise bricklaying, including half brick walling and corner building
  • You'll learn cavity walling and block work techniques
  • You'll develop painting and decorating skills, including tiling a plain wall
  • You'll work on joinery tasks and build your own models
  • You'll cover plastering techniques
  • You'll study health and safety requirements for the construction industry
  • You'll complete at least two weeks of work experience in a construction setting

How you will learn

Learning is hands-on and workshop-based. You'll complete written assignments and demonstrate practical skills while observed by your tutor. Functional Skills English and maths are woven throughout. You'll also take part in at least two weeks of work experience, which the centre will help you arrange and prepare for.
