It's a practical way to sample several trades before committing to one.

Who this course is for

This qualification will provide you the ideal introduction to the construction industry and cover essential skills in the following construction trades: bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, construction operations, wall and floor tiling and plumbing.

Entry requirements

Must be aged 16 to 18 and wanting an introduction to the variety of construction trades, to gain skills in those areas and perhaps to decide which trade is the right one to pursue a career in. No previous knowledge or experience is required.

What you will learn

  • You'll practise core bricklaying techniques, including laying and bonding.
  • You'll develop carpentry and joinery skills using hand and power tools.
  • You'll apply plastering techniques to walls and surfaces.
  • You'll learn painting and decorating methods for interior surfaces.
  • You'll carry out basic plumbing tasks and understand pipe systems.
  • You'll work with wall and floor tiling, including cutting and fixing.
  • You'll cover construction operations, including site safety and working practices.

How you will learn

You'll learn through practical, hands-on sessions in a classroom and workshop setting. Assessment is based on your practical work across the different trade areas. You'll be observed completing tasks and assessed on the skills you demonstrate throughout the course.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Nova Training Netherton will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Bricklayer's labourer: support bricklayers on residential and commercial sites.
  • Carpentry apprentice: assist with first-fix and second-fix carpentry work.
  • Plastering labourer: mix and prepare materials, assist with plastering tasks.
  • Painting and decorating apprentice: interior and exterior decorating work.
  • Plumbing apprentice: support plumbers on domestic installations.
  • Construction operative: general site work, groundwork, and materials handling.

What you could study next

A Level 1 construction skills qualification is a starting point, not an end point. From here, you could move into a Level 2 Diploma in a specific trade, such as bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, or plastering. A Level 2 NVQ in your chosen trade is the route toward a CSCS skilled-worker card, which most employers require on site. Many learners also use this course to decide which trade to pursue before applying for an apprenticeship.
