Free Level 1 Construction Skills Course in Poole. Classes run at Bournemouth and Poole College of Further Education, full-time during the day. The course is for 16 to 18 year olds.

You'll work across a range of trades, with a strong focus on plastering, bricklaying, and property maintenance. Health and safety, construction theory, and employability skills are also covered. The course runs over one year. Entry requires GCSEs at grades 2 to 3 in English and Maths, or Functional Skills at Level 1. You'll be invited to an interview before you start.

You'll finish with a City and Guilds Certificate in Construction Skills.

It provides a solid foundation in practical, trade-based skills, while also supporting students to develop essential Maths, English, and employability skills. The course is focused on helping learners identify and take their next steps towards a successful career in Construction.

Entry requirements

We require GCSE’s 3-2 in English and maths or Functional Skills at a L1. Applicants will be invited to attend an interview, where we’ll discuss your behaviour, attendance record, and personal circumstances to ensure the course is the right fit for you. A strong interest in the construction industry is essential.

What you will learn

  • You'll practise plastering techniques, including preparing surfaces and applying finishing coats.
  • You'll learn bricklaying, including block walling and constructing half-brick return corners.
  • You'll carry out property maintenance tasks relevant to the local industry.
  • You'll produce components from moulds as part of practical trade work.
  • You'll study health and safety in construction workshops.
  • You'll develop Maths and English skills alongside your trade training.
  • You'll build employability skills to help you move into work or further training.

How you will learn

You'll learn through hands-on practical work in college workshops. Assessments cover both practical tasks and trade theory. You'll wear a uniform and steel-toe cap boots in the workshops, all of which are provided. PPE is supplied and must be worn during assessments. Some home study and enrichment activities also form part of the course.

What you will need to bring

Bournemouth and Poole College of Further Education provides your uniform, tools, equipment, and PPE. Shorts are not permitted in the workshops. The college will confirm any other requirements at your interview and enrolment.
