About this course

Free Level 1 Bricklaying Course in Gravesend. Classes run at North Kent College Gravesend, full-time during the day. You'll spend time in the workshop building practical hand skills, and in the classroom covering construction theory, health and safety, and how to calculate quantities. The course runs for one year. It covers cavity walls, solid walls, blockwork, and transferring levels. Your Study Programme also includes opportunities to develop your English and Maths. A solid starting point for anyone pursuing a bricklaying qualification.

Who this course is for

This Level 1 course is a mixture of practical and theory, with a mixture of the time spent in the workshop, developing the hand skills needed to build cavity walls, solid walls, blockwork and the ability to transfer levels. In the class the learners will know how to work safely in construction, relay information, calculate quantities, communicate with others and knowledge of construction technology. Our Study Programme includes opportunities for you to develop your English and Maths skills as required. You may be expected to complete either functional skills or GCSE qualifications as part of your course depending on your GCSE results. The learners will be taught by highly qualified tutors with years of trade experience in well equipped workshops. The programme runs over approximately 3 days a week.

What you will learn

  • You'll build cavity walls, solid walls, and blockwork using correct techniques.
  • You'll develop the hand skills needed to transfer levels accurately.
  • You'll learn how to work safely on construction sites.
  • You'll calculate material quantities for bricklaying tasks.
  • You'll communicate and relay information in a construction context.
  • You'll gain knowledge of construction technology and materials.

How you will learn

Learning is split between workshop sessions and classroom-based theory. In the workshop, you'll practise hands-on bricklaying skills. In the classroom, you'll cover health and safety, construction knowledge, and numeracy tasks. Assessment is through a combination of practical tasks and theory work completed throughout the year.

The centre will provide most materials. North Kent College Gravesend will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Bricklayer's labourer: support skilled bricklayers on site
  • Construction operative: general building and groundwork roles
  • Trainee bricklayer: entry-level bricklaying work while you build experience
  • Dry stone waller: specialist masonry work in landscaping and heritage

What you could study next

Level 1 is a strong foundation, but most bricklaying careers require further study. A Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying is the natural next step, building on the skills you've developed here.
