About this course

Level 1 Bricklaying Course in Nottingham. Classes run at Basford, full-time during the day. You'll study safe working practices, how to read building drawings, and how to build cavity and solid walls. The course combines classroom theory with hands-on workshop sessions in a dedicated construction centre. It runs for one year and includes English, maths, and work experience as part of your programme. Entry requires 4 GCSEs at grades 3 - 1 including English and Maths, or a relevant Entry Level 3 vocational qualification, plus an initial assessment.

Who this course is for

This course is perfect if you want to pursue a career in bricklaying, enjoy building and want to develop your skills in this trade.

Entry requirements

You'll need 4 GCSEs at grades 3-1 (D-G), including English Language and Maths at grades 3-1 (D-G), or a relevant Entry 3 vocational qualification.

With this you will be asked to sit an initial assessment and this must show that you are ready to study English and maths at Level 1. If your results are lower than this, don't worry, we'll find the right course for you.

What you will learn

  • You'll learn safe working practices used across the construction industry.
  • You'll develop the skills to read and interpret building drawings.
  • You'll calculate quantities of materials needed for bricklaying tasks.
  • You'll practise cavity wall and solid wall construction techniques.
  • You'll build understanding of how to plan and build to specification.
  • You'll strengthen your English and maths alongside your trade skills.

How you will learn

Learning is classroom-based and practical. You'll study theory in the classroom and develop hands-on skills in a workshop environment at the construction centre. Assessment is through a combination of practical tasks and written work. You'll also complete an initial assessment before the course begins to confirm you're ready to study English and maths at Level 1.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Basford will confirm anything else you need before you start.

  • Bricklayer - how to become a bricklayer starting with this qualification.
  • Bricklaying labourer - support skilled bricklayers on construction sites.
  • Construction operative - general site work while building trade experience.

What you could study next

After this level 1 bricklaying qualification, you could move on to a Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying, which takes your practical skills further and is a step toward the Level 3 NVQ that bricklayers need for a CSCS skilled-worker card. Some learners also progress to an Apprenticeship in Bricklaying, combining paid work with further study.
