About this course

Free GCSE Maths course in Northampton. Classes run at Northampton College, part-time during the day, with one two-and-a-half-hour session each week.

The course is free for permanent UK residents who do not yet hold a GCSE Maths grade 4 or above. You'll study at Foundation Level, aiming for a grade 4 or grade 5. Topics include number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability, and statistics. You'll also develop problem-solving skills and learn to apply maths across different contexts. The course runs over one year.

You'll finish with a GCSE in Mathematics.

Who this course is for

This is a Foundation Level GCSE Maths course for students who would like to achieve a grade 4 or a grade 5. It is taught during a two and a half hour lesson each week where students will develop their mathematical understanding and technique. Students will also improve their problem-solving skills and build on their current numeracy knowledge so they are able to apply them to a variety of contexts and question types.

GCSE Maths grade 4 (minimum) is a standard qualification requirement for most employers and for courses at Level 3 and above.

Entry requirements

Tutor based assessment, previous study will be an advantage. There will also be an assessment in week four or five. This will determine whether the GCSE course is suitable for you. If not, you will be advised of alternative Maths courses you could transfer to.

How you will learn

There is an initial tutor-based assessment before you start, and a further assessment around week four or five to confirm the course is the right level for you. The GCSE is assessed by written exams at the end of the course.
