About this course

Free GCSE English Language Course in Burton-on-Trent. Classes run at Paget High School, Business and Enterprise College, full-time during the day.

The course is compulsory for Sixth Form students who have not yet achieved the required grade in GCSE English Language. Over two years, you'll develop your reading, writing, and spoken language skills. You'll study creative reading and writing, and explore writers' viewpoints and perspectives. AQA assesses the course through two written papers, each lasting one hour and forty-five minutes, plus a Speaking and Listening component.

You'll finish with a GCSE in English Language.

Who this course is for

This is a COMPULSORY course for students entering the Sixth Form, who have not previously achieved the Government’s required grade in GCSE English Language.

Entry requirements

This is a new course as there have been changes to how GCSE English Language is examined. The qualification will be graded on a nine-point scale: 1 to 9 - where 9 is the best grade. Speaking and Listening (Non-examination assessed; 0% weighting of GCSE)• Paper 1: Exploring creative reading and writing (50%) Written paper: 1 hour 45 minutes Paper 2: Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives (50%) Written paper: 1 hour 45 minutes

  • You'll learn how to write clearly and effectively for different purposes and audiences.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based lessons covering reading, writing, and spoken language. Assessment is by two written exams. Paper 1 covers creative reading and writing and lasts one hour and forty-five minutes. Paper 2 covers writers' viewpoints and perspectives and also lasts one hour and forty-five minutes. Speaking and Listening is assessed separately and does not count toward your final grade.
