You'll finish with a GCSE in English Language, awarded by AQA.

Who this course is for

If you have not yet achieved a grade 4 (C) in English GCSE, then this 1-year course gives you the chance to improve your English skills and to re-sit the examination alongside your main course of study.

Entry requirements

Sixth Form entry requires a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above or equivalent, including at least a grade 4 in Maths or English. Should you not achieve a grade 4 or above in English or Maths then you will be required to continue to study these qualifications or equivalents in Year 12 and Year 13 if necessary.

What you will learn

  • You'll read and respond to a range of fiction and non-fiction texts.
  • You'll write for different purposes and audiences, including narrative and descriptive writing.
  • You'll analyse how writers use language and structure to achieve effects.
  • You'll compare texts and evaluate a writer's viewpoint.
  • You'll produce clear, accurate written English across a range of tasks.
  • You'll develop spoken language skills through a formal presentation or discussion.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom lessons alongside your other sixth form subjects. Assessment is by two written exams at the end of the course. There is no coursework, but a spoken language endorsement is assessed separately and reported on your certificate. Your teacher will prepare you for both exam papers throughout the course.
