About this course

Free Functional Skills Maths Level 1 in March. Classes run at The March Community Centre during the day, part-time, so you can fit study around other commitments. You'll start with an initial assessment to confirm this is the right level for you. The course covers everyday maths including money, time, distance, shape, and position. It runs over 11 months. A free functional skills maths course for adults aged 19 and over, it's a recognised GCSE maths alternative that many employers accept.

Who this course is for

United Learning offer whole year funded courses for adults from Entry Level 2 to Level 2. These courses will help you feel more confident in using numbers for everyday things like money, time, distance, shape and position and gain a qualification.  Do you need to update your CV? Did you not achieve your Maths qualification through school? Are you aged 19 or over?  You will need to complete an initial assessment prior to starting the course, where it will be discussed if you meet the criteria for a funded place.

Entry requirements

No previous experience required.  You are required to complete an initial assessment / screening of Maths levels prior to enrolment on the course – please telephone the office on 01223 712340 to make an appointment.

What you will learn

  • You'll work with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages in everyday contexts.
  • You'll handle money, including budgeting, bills, and calculating change.
  • You'll read and use information about time, including timetables and schedules.
  • You'll measure and work with distance, weight, and capacity.
  • You'll understand and use basic shape and space, including area and perimeter.
  • You'll interpret charts, tables, and graphs to find and compare information.
  • You'll solve practical maths problems using the methods covered on the course.

How you will learn

You'll attend classroom-based sessions at The March Community Centre. Learning is delivered face to face, working through practical maths tasks linked to everyday life. Assessment for the Pearson Edexcel Level 1 Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics is by a written exam. You'll complete an initial assessment before the course begins so the teaching can be planned around your starting point.
