The aim of Functional Skills English at Level 1 is to encourage learners to
demonstrate their speaking, listening and communicating, reading and writing skills in
a range of contexts and for various purposes. These skills are of vital importance in
many areas as they are essential in many careers and can add immeasurably to an
individuals general quality of life. In its range of assessment opportunities, this
specification attempts to recognise at least part of that diversity.
