About this course

Free Functional Skills English Level 2 in March. Classes run at The March Community Centre, part-time during the day over 11 months. You'll cover reading, writing, speaking, and listening through practical, real-life tasks. A level 2 functional skills english qualification is the recognised GCSE english equivalent, accepted by employers and colleges when they ask for GCSE English or equivalent. Before you enrol, you'll have an initial assessment to confirm the right level for you. The centre will use it to plan your learning. City and Guilds Functional Skills Qualification in English Level 2 with certificate.

Who this course is for

This whole year funded course of English Functional Skills is for adults wanting to achieve a qualification in Functional Skills English (up to and including Level 2). You will study a range of English skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening – based upon real-life settings.  Do you need to update your CV? Did you not achieve your English qualification through school? Are you 19 years old or over?  Functional skills are practical skills in English that allow learners to work confidently, effectively and independently in life. These courses are not suitable for learning English as a foreign language.  The classes are generally small, delivered to suit your starting point and assessments are offered through City and Guilds after 55 hours teaching. You will need to complete an initial assessment prior to starting the course.

Entry requirements

No previous experience required.  You are required to complete an initial assessment / screening of English levels prior to enrolment on the course – please telephone the office on 01223 712340 to make an appointment.

  • You'll read and understand a range of texts, including workplace documents and everyday materials.
  • You'll write clearly and accurately for different purposes and audiences.
  • You'll develop your spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • You'll practise speaking and listening skills in real-life contexts.
  • You'll build skills for updating a CV, writing emails, and communicating at work.
  • You'll work with texts based on everyday situations, from forms to letters to reports.

How you will learn

You'll learn in a classroom at The March Community Centre, with a tutor guiding sessions on reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Assessment is through written tasks and a spoken component. To gain the Level 2 qualification, you'll sit externally assessed tests in reading and writing, plus a speaking and listening assessment. Classes run part-time during the day across 11 months.
