Entry level to Level 1 and Level 2.

The programme is designed to:

  • Help with ordinary activities such as budgeting and helping children with their school work.
  • Build confidence
  • Enable progression to other courses e.g. Teaching Assistant, Access Programmes or GCSEs.

Upon joining the course, you will undertake an initial assessment to determine your current level.You can progress from Entry level to Level 1 and Level 2 of the programme. Gaining a functional skills maths qualification can enhance job and learning opportunities.

Courses are 2 hours per week. Held at various locations. Both daytime and evening options are available across North and South Solihull. Various start dates are available.

The qualification received will be a nationally recognised maths qualification - Functional Skills Maths.

Entry requirements

Students must be aged 19+.

What you will learn

  • You'll work with whole numbers, including counting, ordering, and simple calculations.
  • You'll handle basic addition and subtraction in everyday contexts.
  • You'll read and interpret simple number information, such as prices and quantities.
  • You'll use maths to manage practical tasks like budgeting and measuring.
  • You'll recognise and use simple shapes, patterns, and data in real situations.

How you will learn

You'll attend classroom-based maths classes at Solihull College and University Centre, two hours per week. Learning is supported by a tutor throughout the course. Assessment is by paper-based or online test. You'll complete the test when you and your tutor agree you're ready.
