About this course

Free Entry Level ESOL Skills for Life (speaking and listening) Course in Birmingham. Classes run at Summerfield Community Centre. You'll have an initial assessment before you enrol to make sure this is the right level for you. The course focuses on spoken English, covering speaking and listening skills you can use at work and in everyday life. It runs full-time during the day and typically takes one month to complete. You must be aged 19 or over and either a UK or European citizen, or have lived in the UK for three years or more.

Who this course is for

To improve language skills by identifying areas for development; To enable you to speak, read and write in English at a level necessary to function and progress at work and in society in general; To develop the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing following the National Adult ESOL Core Curriculum; To improve their existing literacy and numeracy skills and progress their chances of accessing employment opportunities.

Entry requirements

Aged 19 and over as of 31st August.

  • UK citizen OR European Citizen or been in UK for three years or more
  • There are no formal entry requirements, but before you enrol you'll have to undertake an initial assessment.

  • You'll practise speaking clearly in everyday English situations.
  • You'll develop your listening skills to understand spoken English at Entry Level 1.
  • You'll build confidence using English in workplace and social settings.
  • You'll identify your own areas for improvement in spoken English.
  • You'll follow the National Adult ESOL Core Curriculum for speaking and listening.

How you will learn

Classes are held in the classroom at Summerfield Community Centre during the day. You'll learn through speaking and listening activities with your teacher and other learners. Assessment is through spoken tasks that reflect real everyday situations. There is no written exam for this speaking and listening Award.

The centre will provide most materials. Summerfield Community Centre will confirm anything else you need before you start.
