Free Entry Level Construction Skills course in Darlington. Classes run full-time at Darlington College. This is a practical, hands-on construction skills course covering a broad range of trades: bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, electrical, plumbing, wall and floor tiling, and construction operations. It runs for 34 weeks. There are no formal entry requirements; you'll attend an interview and the college may ask for a school or college report.

Who this course is for

This qualification provides the ideal introduction to the construction industry and covers essential skills in the following construction trades: bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, construction operations, wall and floor tiling, electrical and plumbing. This level is an introduction to the types of skills that are involved in the construction industry. This is a practical course which will allow you to learn and develop various skills relating to the construction industry trade. The course has been designed to: Introduce learners to the construction industry Help learners progress in this area of the industry Develop skills and knowledge at this level Prepare for taking further qualifications to enable them to enter the industry in their craft

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements however, a keen interest in the subject is essential. We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

What you will learn

  • You'll practise core bricklaying techniques, including laying and bonding.
  • You'll develop carpentry and joinery skills, working with timber and basic joints.
  • You'll learn plastering methods for internal walls and surfaces.
  • You'll apply painting and decorating techniques to different surfaces.
  • You'll get hands-on experience of wall and floor tiling.
  • You'll be introduced to basic electrical and plumbing principles.
  • You'll carry out general construction operations used across the industry.

How you will learn

This is a classroom-based, practical course. You'll learn through hands-on workshop sessions in each trade area. Assessment is practical and skills-based, with you demonstrating what you can do in each trade. There is no written exam. Your progress is assessed as you work through each area of the course.
