Free Entry Level 3 Functional Skills Maths in Widnes. Classes run at Ashley School 6th Form, part-time during the day. This free functional skills maths course takes around two years to complete. No prior qualifications are needed. You'll have an initial assessment to confirm Entry Level 3 is the right starting point, and the centre will use it to plan your learning. The course covers everyday maths skills used at work and in daily life. It's a recognised entry level functional skills maths qualification and a stepping stone toward Level 1 and Level 2 Functional Skills Maths, the gcse maths alternative accepted by many employers.

Entry requirements

No prior knowledge, understanding, skills or qualifications are required before learners register for this qualification. However, centres must follow the guidance given in the Pearson document A guide to recruiting with integrity and enrolling learners onto qualifications (see Section 8 Access and recruitment for more information).

What you will learn

  • You'll work with whole numbers, including adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.
  • You'll understand and use simple fractions and percentages in everyday contexts.
  • You'll read, interpret and use basic charts, tables and graphs.
  • You'll measure and work with common units such as length, weight, capacity and time.
  • You'll handle money and solve straightforward problems involving cost and change.
  • You'll use basic shape and space skills, including recognising common 2D and 3D shapes.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based sessions at Ashley School 6th Form, working through topics with tutor support. Assessment is by a written on-screen or paper-based exam set and marked by Pearson Edexcel. You must pass the external test to achieve the qualification. There is no portfolio or coursework element for this qualification.

The centre will provide most materials. Ashley School 6th Form will confirm anything else you need before you start.
