This is an entry level esol skills for life: reading course for adults whose first language is not English. You'll build your ability to read English in a relaxed classroom setting alongside people from other language backgrounds. Before you start, you'll complete an English Placement Test and a BKSB test. These help place you at the right level.

Who this course is for

These two courses are for part-time learners whose native language is not English, who live or plan to live in the UK and who have little or no knowledge of English. It is ideal for people who want to practice their English in an informal environment and meet people of other nationalities.

Entry requirements

There is no entry requirement for studying the English programme but you will be asked to complete an English Placement Test (EPT) and BKSB test which will assess your level of English and determine your course.

What you will learn

  • You'll recognise common words and short phrases in everyday written English.
  • You'll read simple signs, notices, and labels.
  • You'll understand basic written instructions.
  • You'll identify key information in short texts.
  • You'll build familiarity with the English alphabet and how letters form words.
