Free Entry Level 1 ESOL Skills for Life: Reading course in Derby. Classes run at Derby College, full-time during the day, over 11 weeks. This is an entry level esol skills for life: reading qualification for people whose first language is not English. You'll build your reading skills in English through classroom-based learning, supported by activities that connect you with education and everyday life in the UK. No formal qualifications are needed to apply. Your English language skills are assessed at interview before you start.
Who this course is for
The Introduction to Lexis programme is a full-time programme for 16 to 18-year-old students whose first language is not English. The programme is for students who may arrive in the UK during the course of the year or who have relocated during the year. The programme also welcomes ESOL students who have been unable to obtain formal qualifications while at school.The overall aim of the programme is to help students improve their English and gain qualifications to enable them to progress to further education or employment.
Entry requirements
No formal qualifications are required. Students are interviewed and their English language skills are assessed before being offered a place on the programme.The course is free to the majority of students, unless they are classed as an international student (more details available on request).
What you will learn
You'll read and understand simple written texts in English.
You'll recognise and use common words and phrases in everyday contexts.
You'll develop skills to read signs, notices, and short documents.
You'll practise reading for meaning in real everyday situations.
You'll build familiarity with written English used in education and work.
How you will learn
You'll learn through classroom-based sessions at Derby College, delivered 12 hours per week. Learning is supported by a range of activities including personal enrichment, community engagement, and tutorial support. Your English language skills are assessed at interview before the course begins, so teaching is matched to your starting level.
