You'll build ensemble performance skills, explore a range of musical styles, and develop your critical listening and review skills. Some musical literacy is essential, and entry requires five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and Maths.

Who this course is for

This course is suitable for all instrumentalists or vocalists who have some proficiency and a passion to develop as a performer. The course broadens experience and skills in ensemble performance and will also include workshop style lessons. Any musical style is suitable to perform and the course includes training in listening and critical review. Confidence in some form of musical literacy skills is essential; students who have not achieved a Merit at Level 2 or will be required to audition for the course. Students should be creative and willing to be involved with the musical activities of the Department.Students who take this course have the opportunity to take part in a variety of course related experiences, such as school concerts, BTEC showcases and Music related school trips.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom teaching, workshop-style ensemble sessions, and performance-based activities. Assessment includes both internally assessed coursework and externally assessed components set by Pearson Edexcel. Your performance work forms a central part of the assessment. The course has 360 guided learning hours over two years, giving you structured time to develop your skills alongside independent practice.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. The Westlands School will confirm anything else you need before you start. You will need to bring your own instrument if you play one, and should be prepared to perform regularly as part of the course.
