About this course

Free BTEC Level 3 Engineering Course in Barnsley. Classes run at Barnsley College STEM Centre, full-time during the day. You'll need four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and science, plus maths at grade 5 or above. This two-year level 3 btec engineering course covers mechanical engineering principles, design, manufacturing, and the systems used across industries like construction, power, health, and transport. You'll study how engineers design machinery, manage production, and oversee technical teams.

Who this course is for

Mechanical engineers develop and design components and machinery used in many industries like manufacturing, construction, water, power, health and transport. They also manage teams of technicians and craftspeople who carry out installation and maintenance work.

As an engineer, you will design and oversee the manufacturing of many products ranging from medical devices to new batteries.

Mechanical engineers design power-producing machines such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines as well as power-using machines, such as refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Mechanical engineers design other machines inside buildings, such as elevators and escalators. They also design material-handling systems, such as conveyor systems and automated transfer stations. If you are technically minded, good at maths and science, and like solving problems, a professional career in engineering could be a great move for you.

Electrical engineers design, build and maintain electrical control systems, machinery and equipment. If you are good at maths, science and IT, and you want a career in engineering, this could be an ideal option for you. You will need to be good at solving problems, structuring your workload and enjoy working as part of a team.

The course combines both areas to provide learners with the best possible skills and knowledge for Further Education and/or Employment

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and science plus maths at grade 5 or above.

What you will learn

  • You'll study mechanical engineering principles, including how components and systems are designed and built.
  • You'll explore power-producing machines such as electric generators and internal combustion engines.
  • You'll learn how engineers design products ranging from medical devices to energy storage systems.
  • You'll develop knowledge of manufacturing processes used across construction, transport, and industrial sectors.
  • You'll understand how engineering teams are organised, including the roles of technicians and craftspeople.
  • You'll apply technical problem-solving to real engineering challenges across a range of contexts.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based sessions at the STEM Centre, combining theory with practical engineering tasks. Assessment on the Pearson Edexcel BTEC National Extended Diploma is through a mix of internally assessed assignments and externally set examinations. Assignments are set and marked by the centre, while exams are set and marked by Pearson Edexcel. Both strands contribute to your final grade.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Barnsley College STEM Centre will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • Mechanical engineer technician: supports design and manufacturing in industrial settings.
  • Engineering design assistant: helps develop components and technical drawings.
  • Manufacturing technician: oversees production processes on the factory floor.
  • Maintenance engineer: installs and services machinery across sectors like energy and transport.
  • Engineering apprentice (higher level): combines work and further study toward chartered status.
  • Technical sales engineer: applies engineering knowledge in a customer-facing commercial role.

What you could study next

  • Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering (Level 4): a natural next step after your BTEC, deepening specialist knowledge in areas like mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering (Level 5): extends the HNC and can lead directly into the second or third year of a university engineering degree.
  • BEng Engineering Degree: for those aiming toward chartered engineer status with a professional body such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
