About this course

Free BTEC Level 3 Art and Design Course in Sompting. Classes run at The Sir Robert Woodard Academy, full-time over two years. The course is free if you are under 19 years old. It centres on the design process, from research and drawing through to modelling and making in a range of materials. You will work through projects that build your skills in experimentation, problem solving, and design innovation. This Pearson Edexcel level 3 btec art and design qualification is assignment-based throughout. BTEC art and design classes run during the day as part of the sixth form.

Who this course is for

The course has Resistant Materials at its core, aiming to encourage designing through experimentation and innovation. It is a natural progression from the Level 2 course we deliver, it is assignment based and you will be working through a series of projects in order to gain the necessary skills to design and manufacture in a variety of materials. The course will be focused on the design process and problem solving, from researching, through drawing and modelling your designs to producing final products.

Entry requirements

You must have achieved at least a grade 4 or C in GCSE Art or a Merit in Level 2 BTEC Art & Design. If you have not previously studied Art, you will be invited to submit a portfolio of work for consideration.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop skills in researching and analysing design problems.
  • You'll practise drawing and modelling techniques to communicate your ideas.
  • You'll design and manufacture in a variety of materials, including resistant materials.
  • You'll work through a series of projects that build your design process from brief to final outcome.
  • You'll experiment with materials and processes to develop innovative solutions.
  • You'll build a body of assignment work that demonstrates your creative and technical development.

How you will learn

The course is entirely assignment-based. You will complete a series of projects, each assessed through the work you produce rather than written exams. Projects cover research, design development, making, and evaluation. You will build a portfolio of work across the two years. Assessment follows the Pearson Edexcel BTEC framework, with grades awarded at Pass, Merit, or Distinction.

What you will need to bring
