About this course

Free Advanced GCE in Computer Science in Canterbury. Classes run at The Canterbury Academy, full-time during the day. The course covers programming, computational thinking, and an expanded maths focus, building on GCSE Computing. You'll develop both the technical knowledge and creative problem-solving skills that underpin modern software and systems work. The course runs over 180 hours. A Grade 6 in English and a Grade 6 in maths are recommended before you start.

Who this course is for

AS and A Level Computer Science qualifications will inspire and challenge students to apply the knowledge they gain with the creative and technical skills they acquire. Here are some of the key benefits of our new Computer Science specifications for you and your students: The new qualifications will be focused on programming, will build on the GCSE Computing and emphasise the importance of computational thinking as a discipline. There'll be an expanded maths focus. The ICT content of the new specifications will be appropriate to a Computer Science qualification. Computational thinking will be at the core of the new specifications. The AS will consist of two components, which will be externally assessed and weighted at 50% each.* The A Level will consist of three components, two of which will be externally marked question papers making up 80% of the qualification.   The other 20% will be the coursework project, which will retain its current qualities but will be more focused, with a greater emphasis on coding and programming with a simple assessment model and marking criteria.

Entry requirements

It is recommended to have a keen interest in ICT and Grade 6 in English and 6 in maths.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop programming skills and write, test, and refine code.
  • You'll apply computational thinking to analyse and solve complex problems.
  • You'll study the mathematical concepts that underpin computer science.
  • You'll explore computer systems, including hardware, software, and networks.
  • You'll learn about data structures and algorithms.
  • You'll understand the principles of databases and data management.
  • You'll examine the legal, ethical, and social issues surrounding computing.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based lessons at The Canterbury Academy, combining theory with practical programming work. Assessment for the OCR Advanced GCE in Computer Science is through written examinations and a programming project component. The written papers test your knowledge of computer systems, algorithms, and programming concepts. The project requires you to analyse a problem and develop a working software solution.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. The Canterbury Academy will confirm anything else you need before you start.
