Free A Level Physics in Plymouth. Classes run at Devonport High School for Girls. This two-year, full-time daytime course covers the core principles of physics alongside hands-on practical work and data analysis. You'll study topics including mechanics and particle physics, with optional specialist areas such as astrophysics, medical physics, and engineering physics. Entry requires a minimum grade 6 at GCSE, with at least a grade 6 in the subjects you want to study. The AQA level 3 a level physics qualification opens doors to university study in science, engineering, and technology.
Who this course is for
To develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles of Physics, gain hands-on practical skills, data analysis skills and an appreciation of how science works and its relevance beyond the laboratory. The transferable skills developed are problem solving, logical thinking and the ability to communicate complex ideas.
Entry requirements
The minimum entry requirement for our Sixth Form is an average grade 6 or higher from GCSEs with a minimum of a grade 5 in English and Mathematics. In addition, for subject specific entry requirements we ideally prefer a grade a 7 or above, but you will require a minimum grade of a 6 for the subjects you wish to study.
What you will learn
You'll develop in-depth knowledge of core physics principles, including mechanics, waves, and electricity.
You'll study optional specialist topics such as astrophysics, medical physics, or engineering physics.
You'll carry out practical experiments and build essential laboratory skills.
You'll analyse data and draw conclusions from experimental results.
You'll apply problem-solving and logical thinking to complex physics problems.
You'll learn to communicate scientific ideas clearly and precisely.
You'll understand how physics connects to real-world applications beyond the classroom.
How you will learn
You'll learn through classroom teaching, practical laboratory sessions, and independent study. Assessment is by written examinations at the end of the two-year course. Practical skills are assessed separately through a practical endorsement, which is reported alongside your A Level grade. The AQA specification includes required practicals that develop hands-on experimental technique throughout the course.
What you will need to bring
The centre will provide most materials. Devonport High School for Girls will confirm anything else you need before you start.
