About this course

Free A Level Physics Course in Malpas. Classes run at Bishop Heber High School, full-time over two years. You'll need five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths and English Language, plus a grade 6 in Science at Higher Tier and a grade 6 in Maths. The course covers measurement and errors, particles and radiation, waves, mechanics and materials, electricity, and further topics including circular motion. It's a strong foundation for university study in physics, engineering, or related sciences.

Who this course is for

A Level Physics is examined by 3 written papers at the end of year 13 covering all the work completed over the 2 years.  Each paper is 2hours long.  Papers 1 and 2 each consist of 85 marks of short and long answer questions and are both worth 34% of the A level. Paper 3 consists of 80 marks and is 32% of the A level. Paper 1 assesses knowledge on measurement and their errors, particles and radiation, waves, mechanics and materials, electricity, and part of topic 6 which is circular motion. Question style is in the form of short, long and multiple choice. Paper 2 assessed the rest of topic 6, further mechanics, 7, fields and their consequences, and 8, nuclear physics with assumed knowledge from the previous topics. Question style is in the form of short, long and multiple choice. Paper 3 assesses practical technique and data analysis, and an optional topic. In addition, students are required to carry out a minimum of 12 practicals over years 12 and 13 and must keep a practical book which includes all their practicals including results tables, data analysis, methods, conclusions.  Students are then awarded a pass (or fail ) for their practical work.

Entry requirements

5 Grade 4 or above including Maths and English Language plus grade 6 in Science at Higher Tier and a grade 6 in Maths.

What you will learn

  • You'll study measurement, units, and experimental errors in physics.
  • You'll explore particles, radiation, and the fundamental structure of matter.
  • You'll analyse waves, including properties, behaviour, and applications.
  • You'll apply principles of mechanics and materials to real physical problems.
  • You'll investigate electrical circuits, charge, and current.
  • You'll examine circular motion and further topics covered across both years.

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom-based lessons across two years. Assessment is entirely by written examination at the end of Year 13. There are three papers, each two hours long. Papers 1 and 2 each carry 85 marks and account for 34% of the A Level. Paper 3 carries 80 marks and accounts for 32%. Questions are a mix of short and long answer format.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Bishop Heber High School will confirm anything else you need before you start.
