About this course

Free A Level Chemistry in Wirral. Classes run at West Kirby Grammar School. You'll need at least a Grade B in GCSE Chemistry or GCSE Science and Additional Science to join. The course runs full-time over two years, covering organic and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and practical laboratory work. Chemistry underpins careers in medicine, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, materials, and engineering. This level 3 a level chemistry qualification opens doors to university courses across the sciences and beyond.

Who this course is for

The world we live in has been shaped by chemistry. Medicines, materials that allow us to communicate electronically, and the clothes we wear all demonstrate the power of chemistry to make our lives better.

Chemists help to understand the world and develop solutions to the problems facing modern society. Some of the work of chemists over recent years has included identifying environmental problems like the hole in the ozone layer and the role of greenhouse gases; developing drugs for previously untreatable diseases and the continuing search to improve our quality of life - without burdening the environment.

For the full A-level, there will be three written papers of 2 hours. Questions will include short and long answer questions as well as multiple choice. Paper 1 will assess the inorganic and some physical chemistry, paper 2 will assess the organic and some physical chemistry and paper 3 will assess all content. All papers are synoptic (assess AS content) and will also assess practical skills & data analysis.

Entry requirements

Grade B (ideally A) in GCSE Chemistry or Science & Additional Science

What you will learn

  • You'll explore organic chemistry, including carbon compounds and reaction mechanisms
  • You'll investigate physical chemistry, including thermodynamics, kinetics, and equilibria
  • You'll carry out practical laboratory experiments and develop analytical skills
  • You'll examine inorganic chemistry, including transition metals and periodicity
  • You'll interpret data and apply mathematical skills to chemical problems
  • You'll understand the role of chemistry in environmental and industrial contexts

How you will learn

You'll learn through classroom lessons and hands-on laboratory practicals at West Kirby Grammar School. Assessment is by written examinations at the end of the two-year course. AQA also requires a practical endorsement, assessed separately through teacher observation of your lab work throughout the course. The endorsement is reported on your certificate alongside your exam grade.

What you will need to bring
