About this course

BEng Mechanical Engineering in Blackpool. Classes run at Bispham Campus, full-time over three years.

Mechanical engineering covers design, manufacture, and how systems are built to work. You'll study topics that apply across automotive, aerospace, and healthcare industries. The course builds the technical knowledge employers in these sectors need.

You'll need at least 48 UCAS points to apply. This must include mathematics and a science, technology, or engineering subject. You'll finish with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering.

Who this course is for

One of the most recognised engineering disciplines, mechanical engineers focus on the design, development, manufacture, installation and maintenance of systems and devices which support the activities of multiple industry sectors, including automotive, aerospace and healthcare. A current shortfall in the number of skilled mechanical engineers means that there are excellent career opportunities so if you are interested in how things are designed, manufactured and made to work, this course could be for you. Our BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree starts at Level 4 with a series of modules covering the core principles of engineering before moving on to subject specialisms at Levels 5 and 6, Candidates who already have a relevant Level 4 qualification are invited to join the programme at Level 5 and can complete the degree in just two years rather than the usual three. Opportunities to explore software and practical subject areas such as computer aided design, controls and simulation and computational fluid dynamics are embedded within the modules to enable a blend of practical and theoretical experiences to enhance employability. Many of our graduates are now employed by major companies such as EDF Energy, Westinghouse Springfields, Airbus, NIC, GCE and Ford Motor Company as mechanical design, production, project or research and development engineers. Industry Accreditation This course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 48 UCAS points (excluding Functional Skills) in an appropriate discipline: DD from A levels to include mathematics and a technology, engineering or science-based subject; PPP from Extended Diploma, MP from Diploma, MM from 90 Credit Diploma in a science or technology-based subject, including passes in mathematics.

What you will learn

  • You'll study the principles of mechanical design and engineering systems.
  • You'll learn how components are manufactured and assembled.
  • You'll explore how engineering applies to automotive, aerospace, and healthcare sectors.
  • You'll develop skills in installation and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • You'll practise solving real engineering problems using technical methods.
  • You'll build knowledge of materials and how they behave under different conditions.

How you will learn

You'll study in the classroom at Bispham Campus, full-time during the day. Learning combines taught sessions with practical and project-based work. Assessment is likely to include assignments, exams, and engineering projects across the three years. The centre will confirm the full assessment structure before you start.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Bispham Campus will confirm anything else you need before you start.
