About this course

Access to HE Humanities Course in Winchester. Evening classes run at Peter Symonds College Stoney Lane Campus, one evening or more per week, so you can fit study around work or other commitments. The course takes one year part-time. It may be free if you are 19 to 23 years old and this is your first full Level 3 qualification. If you are 19 or over and outside that band, fees may apply, though an Advanced Learner Loan or instalment plan may be available. You will study humanities subjects and develop the academic skills universities expect. This is a recognised route into higher education for adult learners returning to study.

Who this course is for

Access to HE provides an alternative route to Higher Education for adult students (19+) who would like to progress to study at university, or who are looking to change career. This qualification can be studied full or part-time and is free for those aged 19-23 if it is their first full Level 3 qualification (2 A levels, 4 AS Levels or equivalent). Advanced Learner Loans are available to cover the cost of fees and will be written off if students go on to complete a degree.

Entry requirements

None specifically needed, although it is useful if students have experienced working at Level 2 (e.g. GCSEs). Most universities expect students to have grade C or above in Maths and English GCSE (or equivalent). Screening will be arranged to ascertain if students will cope with level 3 work.

What you will learn

  • You'll develop essay-writing and academic argument skills to university entry standard.
  • You'll study core humanities subjects such as history, sociology, philosophy, or literature, depending on the course units.
  • You'll learn how to research, reference, and evaluate sources critically.
  • You'll build the reading and analytical skills that degree-level study requires.
  • You'll complete assessed assignments that reflect the style of university coursework.

How you will learn

You will learn through classroom sessions at Peter Symonds College Stoney Lane Campus. Teaching combines tutor-led sessions, discussion, and guided independent study. Assessment is through written assignments and coursework rather than formal exams. You will receive feedback on your work throughout the year to help you reach the standard universities expect.

What you will need to bring

The centre will provide most materials. Peter Symonds College Stoney Lane Campus will confirm anything else you need before you start.

Where next

Jobs you could do

  • You'll need a degree first for most roles this leads to. The Diploma is a step toward university, not direct employment entry. Common degree destinations include:
  • Social worker, after a relevant degree and registration
  • Teacher or lecturer, after a degree and teacher training
  • Journalist or writer, after a degree in English or media
  • Historian or researcher, after a humanities degree
  • Counsellor or psychologist, after a relevant degree and further training
  • Civil service or policy analyst, after a humanities or social science degree

What you could study next

The natural next step is a university degree. Most UK universities accept the Access to HE Diploma as a direct entry qualification. You could apply through UCAS for a BA or BSc in a humanities subject such as history, English, philosophy, sociology, or psychology. Some universities also offer foundation years if you want a gentler transition. If you go on to complete a degree, any Advanced Learner Loan taken out for this course will be written off.
