About this course

GCSE English Language Course in Hastings. Classes run at East Sussex College Hastings Station Plaza Campus, part-time during the day over 30 weeks. It may be free if you're 19 or over and haven't already achieved a Level 2 English qualification. Fees may apply otherwise.

You'll read and analyse fiction and non-fiction texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The course covers spelling, punctuation and grammar, and how language is used in different contexts. You'll also develop your writing skills and give a formal presentation. Two written exams at the end assess your reading and writing.

You'll finish with a GCSE in English Language.

Study with us and gain a GCSE in English Language. The course will enable you to read a wide range of texts fluently and with good understanding. You will learn to read critically and use the knowledge and skills gained from wider reading to inform and improve your own writing. You will learn to write effectively and coherently using standard English, and you will also develop your spoken communication skills.Gaining a grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language can help you achieve your personal or career goals - it is a stepping stone to many types of education and employment. You should take this course if you intend to progress to a Level 3 programme, apply for a university course, or if this qualification is required by specific employers.

What you will learn

How you will learn

Classes are classroom based and run part-time during the day. You'll be assessed by two final exams at the end of the course. One exam focuses on fiction writing and one on non-fiction texts. Each paper is 105 minutes long. Your scores from both papers combine to give your final grade. You'll also give a formal presentation, which is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction but does not count toward your overall grade.
